Health desk – 11 May 2021: WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed support for the pledges of US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris to support the temporary abandonment of the COVID-19 vaccine This is a bold move aimed at ending the pandemic as soon as possible.
“This is an important moment in the fight against COVID-19. US President Joe Biden (Joe Biden) and US Trade Representative Ambassador Katherine Tai pledged to support the abandonment of intellectual property protection for vaccines. This is the response of the US leadership A strong example of the global health challenge.”
“I commend the United States for its historic decision on vaccine fairness and put the well-being of all people around the world first at a critical moment. Now, let us all unite quickly to produce the life-saving COVID -19 vaccine .scientists are based on the ingenuity and dedication.”
Ambassador Dai issued a statement that the special situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic requires special measures to deal with and the need to abandon the intellectual property protection of vaccines to help end the pandemic. The statement went on to say that the United States will participate in negotiations in the World Trade Organization to support the temporary abandonment of protection and cooperate with the private sector and other partners to expand the production and sales of vaccines.
Dr. Tedros added: “The White House’s support for the temporary abandonment of intellectual property rights for the COVID-19 vaccine reflects the wisdom and moral leadership of the United States to end this pandemic. But I am not surprised by this announcement. This is My expectations of President Biden’s administration.”
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, WHO has been working with partners to expand the development and distribution of vaccines, diagnosis and treatment through the use of COVID-19 tool accelerators. One of the facility is COVAX, which shares vaccines fairly. The facility is for high-risk groups all over the world.
