Health Desk – 08 Apr, 2021: The government has allowed shopping malls and stores to reopen for five days from Friday amid restrictions to stem the spread of the coronavirus.
Malls and stores can operate between 9am and 5pm until April 13 following strict health rules, says a notification issued by the Cabinet Division on Thursday.
It said also warned of legal actions in case of violation of hygiene rules.
The country has gone to a seven-day lockdown from Monday amid a resurgence of new infections and deaths. Shopping malls and stores have been closed since then.
The government initially banned public transports, which were allowed to operate from Wednesday between 6am and 6pm.
Shop owners and employees in Dhaka and several others places across the country, have been demonstrating since the decision of a lockdown was announced.
On Tuesday, several protests were held across the capital for the third day by stakeholders of different sectors, demanding an end to the weeklong lockdown.
The government has said that it aims to control unnecessary public movements and gatherings with stronger monitoring by members of law enforcement agencies and thus contain the virus transmission.
As the country has been experiencing record-breaking Covid cases for the past few days, the government on Sunday announced to impose a weeklong countrywide lockdown.
