Health Desk-13 September 2020: Physicians and researchers blame fats and trans-fats for overall heart disease. Half of all non-communicable disease deaths in Bangladesh are due to heart disease, which is about three lac.
Researchers say that trans fats are a major cause of heart disease. Himel Saha, an associate professor in the Department of Cardiology at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University in Dhaka, said the trans-fat is responsible for most of the heart attacks in Bangladesh.
He said, 'People in Bangladesh have a tendency to eat fried food, biscuits, chanachur, chips or many such unhealthy foods. This is the cause of trans fat heart disease.
A few years ago, the National Heart Foundation tested 10 biscuits collected from different parts of the capital as part of a study that found 5 to 31 percent trans fat, several times higher than the World Health Organization's standard.
According to the World Health Organization, trans fat is responsible for 4.41 percent of all deaths in Bangladesh each year.
