Mobile Court fines shops for selling chemically-ripened mangoes, rotten dates

Health Desk- 11 May 2020: A mobile court of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Sunday fined 12 wholesale mangoes and date shops in the capital’s Badamtali area over Tk 4 million for selling chemically-ripened mangoes and rotten dates.

The court led by Executive Magistrate of RAB Headquarters Sarwar Alam also sentenced several terms of jail to three traders.

Of the amount, Tk 2.5 million (25 lac) was fined to 10 wholesale mango shops.

Tk one lac was fined to Sadek Hossain of Ramjan Mia Arat, Tk one lac to Mofijul of Hasaner Arat, Tk four lac to Dulal and Dipak of Riyan Enterprise with one year of imprisonment each, Tk two lac to Abdul Jabbar of Jabbar Traders, Tk four lac to Yasin Bepari of Nipa Enterprise, Tk six lac to Kamrul Islam of Alvi Enterprise, Tk five lac to Shamim Sardar of Shamim Traders, Tk one lac to Saidul Bepari of Badsha Enterprise, Tk Three lac to Dadon Mia of Sabuj Enterprise and Fruits Bitan and Tk two lac to Altaf Bepari of Khadiza Enterprise.

On the other hand, Tk 16 lac was fined to two date selling shops, and Tk 10 lac was fined to Allahar Dan Food Products and Tk six lac to Rubina Enterprise.

Sarwar Alam said the chemically ripened immature mangoes were being sold at different wholesale shops of the capital from a week before. But no variety of mangoes got matured, according to the calendar of the Department of Agriculture.

He said that the mangoes ripened with calcium carbohydrate were brought from Satkhira, Rajshahi and Chapainawabganj districts.  The surface of the mangoes looked yellow, but after cutting it was found totally immature. RAB-10 and Department of Agricultural Extension helped the court, which raided from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm.

Deputy Director of the department Rafiqul Islam was also present during the drive.
