Health Desk--6 August, 2018: The draft of Road Transport Act aimed at reducing road accidents and loss of lives will be placed before the cabinet meeting to be held on August 6.
After the deaths of two students in a road accident in Dhaka on July 29, law minister Anisul Huq and some other cabinet members said the government is going to amend the Road Transport Act having a provision of severe punishment to the delinquent drivers and transport owners for accidents and loss of lives.
It is learnt that the draft law has proposed an increase in jail terms and fine for the drivers and transport owners for accidents and death of passengers and workers.
It is not sure as to whether the draft law has proposed capital punishment or not.
On March 27, 2017, the cabinet approved in principle the draft of the road transport act and made some observations.
The Road Transport and Highway Division on April 17, 2017 sent the proposed draft to the legislative and parliamentary affairs division of the law ministry for vetting.
