Health Desk-- 15 May, 2018: At least 10 people died and 30 others fell sick in a stampede and heatstroke in Satkania upazila of Chittagong district on Monday.
The deceased include nine women and a child. Most of the sick people were admitted to local hospital.
They got scrambled amid a scorching heat while collecting zakat and iftar items.
About 35,000 people, mostly women and children, from nearby upazilas and districts rushed to the spot, leading to the stampede.
Kabir Group fixed Monday for distributing zakat and iftar items on the Kaderia Moinul Ulum Madrasa ground at Gatiadanga in Satkania.
Hearing the news, people started rushing to the spot on Sunday.
Women and children started standing in long queues on Sunday night.
Satkania UNO Mobarak Hossain said the accident occurred as hundreds of women and children scrambled to get zakat and iftar items.
Lawmaker Abu Reza Mohammad Nezamuddin Nadvi visited the spot in the afternoon.
The KSRM authorities will provide Tk 10,000 to each of the deceased for their burial, Tk 300,000 in compensation and employment to the relatives at their industries, he said.
KSRM Group Director Shahriar Jahan said in a statement that they took preparations for distributing zakat and iftar items like every year on Monday.
Regretting the incident, he said they will provide Tk 300,000 to each of the deceased’s family and employment to the family members.
Chattogram Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Elius Hossain told the journalists that they inspected the place of occurrence.
A five-member committee, headed by additional district magistrate, was formed to investigate the incident, he said.
