Health Desk: May 8, 2017-- World Thalassemia Day is being observed across the country as elsewhere in the globe on May 08. The day is aimed at creating awareness among people about the lethal disease.
Meanwhile, International Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is also being observed on Monday, May 8. Its objective is to acknowledge the services of volunteers all over the world.
This year’s theme of the Day is ‘Together for Humanity’.
According to the experts, due to lack of awareness about the deadly disease, the birth of thalassemia-affected baby is increasing day by day in Bangladesh. When both the father and the mother are the carriers of thalassemia, the chance of having thalassemia affected baby increases.
However, many countries like Cyprus, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Iran, even Pakistan made a law to mandatory test blood before marriage and such a way they have diminished the birth of thalassemia-affected children.
