Health Desk--5th May, 2018: The International Day of the Midwife (IDM) 2018 is being observed in the country as elsewhere across the globe on Saturday.
President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages to mark the day.
In his message, President M Abdul Hamid laid emphasis on increasing the numbers of trained and skilled midwives in the country to reduce mother and child mortality rates at desired level.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in her message, said her government has established 18,000 community clinics and union health centers at grass root level to reach healthcare services at doorsteps of people.
The day is being observed as a mark of recognition to the contribution of midwives to saving lives of women, adolescent girls and newborns, sometimes under very difficult circumstances, according to a press release.
