Abducted newborn rescued in N’ganj

Health Desk—June 09, 2017: A newborn baby, who was stolen from the mother’s lap at the labour ward of Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) in Barisal on June 4, was rescued from a house at Fatulla in Narayanganj early Thursday.

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-8) arrested three persons identified as Hawa Bibi, 45, her daughter Rina Begum, 22, and son-in-law Solaiman Hossain, 28, in this connection.

All of them hail from Nalbunia under Taltali upazila of Barguna district.

Salma Begum, wife of construction worker Anwar Hossain Akon of village Khorki under Mehendiganj in Barisal, gave birth to a baby boy at SBMCH on June 1, ‍ Lieutenant Colonel Anwar Uzzaman, commanding officer of RAB-8.

Father of the baby boy filed a case in this connection with Barisal Kotwali Police Station on June 4 night after his baby was stolen in the early hours of the day. He also appealed to the RAB-8 in the next day to rescue his son.

Later, RAB started operation in this regard and at first, detained Hawa Begum on Tuesday night.

According to her confessional statement, the RAB team raided the house of Rina and Sulaiman in Fatulla and recovered the newborn baby.

In their confessional statement before the RAB, the arrestees said as Rina have no offspring, she is getting sick both physically and mentally. So, they stole the newborn baby for rearing.

The arrestees, however, were handed over to police and the recovered baby to his parents.
