Health Desk: 27 April 2018: Child marriage is a major hurdle to sustainable development of the country, speakers observed at a seminar on Thursday.
“Child marriage is one of the obstacles to the country’s achieving sustainable development. In terms of child marriage, Bangladesh is placed at fourth place, which is a matter of grave concern,” commented Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) Chairman Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad.
PKSF organised the seminar styled: “Coordinated Efforts to Prevent Child Marriage” at its office in the city to create awareness on the pressing issue.
PKSF Managing Director Md Abdul Karim said nearly 52 percent women of the country are subjected to child marriage, which is an indicator of social discrimination and an impediment to development.
The PKSF officials informed that PKSF has been implementing a number of programmes to ensure sustainable development, a major objective of which is empowering women and girl child and ensure gender equality.
