Health Desk—August 1, 2017: The Health and Family Welfare Ministry has taken all preparations to observe the World Breastfeeding Week from August 1 to August 7.

State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ministry Zahid Malek came up with the information at a press briefing held at the Ministry on Monday.

The Ministry will inaugurate the week at Osmani Memorial Auditorium on August 1, he said.

The theme of this year’s week is “Sustaining Breastfeeding – Together!”

The Health Ministry will chalk out elaborate programmes including discussion, rally, art competition, publish special feature on the newspaper and send SMS over mobile phones on the occasion.

“In Bangladesh, the breastfeeding rate is now 55 percent and we are working to bring the rate up to 100 percent,” said Zahid.

He also urged all owners of garments, factories and industries to make a breastfeeding corner for their employees in their respective office premises.

To a question about the number of caesarean births, the State Minister said “The rate of caesarean births has increased in Bangladesh as 20-25 percent patients undergo surgery from government hospital while it is 50 percent in private hospital.”
