Bibi Fatema Khatun—Dec 26, 2017: With an aim to reach healthcare at door steps, is currently making regular report on Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).

At the very beginning of such report, the Vice Chanchellor of BSMMU Professor Dr. Kamrul Hasan Khan, is published here for readers. This prominent teacher shared several things related to this institution.

Here is the first episode of his interview for interested readers. BSMMU established in 1965 and converted IPGMR into a Medical University in 1998. What’s its earlier story?

Prof Dr. Kamrul Hasan Khan: In 1965 the hospital wasn’t here in Shahbag. It was in Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) campus. This institution was basically relocated here from DMCH campus in late 1971. In 1972, by the initiative of Father of Nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, it fully turned into IPGMR, popularly known as PG Hospital, and replaced by Shahbag Hotel. ‘Hotel Shahbag’ was located here in this building (Block-B).

The hospital started its primary activities at the 3rd floor of Block –A. In 1972, the Blood Transfusion Center was on the 1st floor of Block -A. In 1998, IPGMR converted into Medical University after Block-C and Block-D. Then continued to immense development. Today, there are 1904 beds in BSMMU. How many beds were there at its opening?

Prof Dr. Kamrul Hasan Khan: In spite of being 800-bed hospital, it was not familiar to people at first. For example; only 8-10 outdoor patients and 300-400 indoor patients at opening. There were only 3 departments for clinical side, like- Surgery, Gynae and Medicine. Starting with only 5 departments it have now 52 departments. So, 52 types of treatment are now available in BSMMU.

We render several other treatment though they have no department. BSMMU is now providing world class treatment. Except cardiac transplant, we provide all other treatments. Hopefully, Bone Marrow Transplant will start within 2/1 months. We have shortcomings in‘Emergency Services’. However, high quality medical equipments will be bought in this regard soon. We believe that enough healthcare facilities are available in BSMMU.

Our attempts to include latest healthcare facilities will always be continued.
