Health Desk- 10 May, 2019: Cyclone Fani has caused damage to homes, infrastructure and agriculture worth Tk 5.36 billion across the country.
Shah Kamal, senior secretary to the disaster management and relief ministry disclosed this at a press conference held after an inter-ministerial meeting at the Secretariat on Thursday.
According to him, the storm destroyed houses worth around Tk 781 million, embankments worth Tk 2.51 billion, fisheries worth Tk 20 million, mango orchards worth Tk 50 million and crops worth at least Tk 380 million.
The government also placed the figure of damage to infrastructure at around Tk 1.61 billion, based on the estimated cost of repairs to 281 kilometres of roads under local government authorities.
A total 36 villages were flooded in which damage of fisheries worth around 28.4 million and forest and environment worth around 50 million, he informed.
State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Md Enamur Rahman said that the prime minister had instructed the authorities to determine the amount of damage in the cyclone and submit a report with a rehabilitation plan by Thursday.
Five people - two in Barguna and one each in Bhola, Noakhali and Lakshmipur - were killed and 53 others injured in the storm, the state minister revealed.
State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Md Enamur Rahman presided over the meeting while agriculture Minister Abdur Razzaque, president of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Disaster Management and Relief Ministry ABM Tajul Islam, Deputy Minister of the Water Resources Ministry AKM Enamul Haque Shamim and other officials were also present.
