Over 250 tons of single-use plastic items discarded a month

Health Desk: 15th Nov’18: A study said more than 250 tons of single-use plastic products majority of which are straws and cutleries are thrown away every month in Dhaka posing hazards to environment and human health

According to the study conducted by the Environment and Social Development Organization-ESDO, five straw and cutlery manufacturers are responsible for producing around 9 crore 75 lakh single-use plastic products per month which weighs around 195 tons in old part of the capital.

The ESDO disclosed the study findings at a meeting at its Dhanmondi office in the capital on Wednesday. 

Single-use or disposable plastic items are used only once before they are thrown away. They include straws, cotton buds, sachets, food packaging, coffee stirrers, water bottles and plastic bags.

ESDO Chairman Syed Marghub Murshed, Secretary General Shahriar Hossain jointly presented the findings while BSTI Chemical Division Chairman Abul Hashem and ESDO Executive Director Siddika Sultana were also present on the occasion.
