Health Desk—4th Dec’17: International Day of Persons with Disabilities was observed across the country like elsewhere around the world on Sunday, aiming to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilise support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.
The theme of the day is “Transformation towards sustainable and resilient society for all”.
Speaking at a discussion at Bangabandhu International Convention Centre on Sunday, Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith urged the country’s people to extend supports to people with disabilities to ensure their participation in the development process.
National Foundation for Disability Development (NFDD), Bangladesh National Social Welfare Council (BNSWC) and National Disability Forum (NDF) jointly organised the programme, marking the 26th International Day of Persons with Disabilities and 19th National Day of Persons with Disabilities.
Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Social Welfare Ministry Dr Md Mozammel Hossain, Secretary of the Social Welfare Ministry Md Zillar Rahman, NDF Secretary General Dr Selina Akther and representative of disabled people Tahmina Akther Tanu, among others, addressed the discussion with State Minister for Social Welfare Ministry Nuruzzaman Ahmed in the chair.
Muhith said there are around 16 lakh disabled people in the country which is one percent of the total population.
