2,297 killed in road crashes in first half of 2017

Health Desk: July 2, 2017-- Minimum 2,297 people were killed and 5,480 others injured in 1,983 road accidents in first six months of the current year.

The fatal accidents took place on several highways and national, inter-district and regional roads across the country between January 1 and June 30, said a report of National Committee to Protect Shipping, Roads and Railways.

The report said, 333 people, including 34 women and 42 children, were killed and 632 others received injuries in 265 road accidents in last month (June).

Of the deceased, a total of 120 people, including 11 women and 15 children, were killed and 226 others injured, only in eight days between June 23 and 30 during Eid holidays.

Because of better transport management and strict monitoring of the authorities concerned, the accidents and casualties decreased during this year’s Eid-ul-Fitr in comparison with previous years, the report observed.

But the road mishaps and casualties increased in last six months in comparison with the same period of last year, the report said.
