India has the second-highest COVID-19 cases

Desk Report- Sept 13, 2020: More than 90,000 new cases of Covid-19 has been recorded in India in the past 24 hours.

The country has reported 4,754,356 confirmed cases which is the second-largest number in the world and with 78,614 deaths making it the third-highest number of death. The reported infections have mostly come from five populous states. The rise is caused due to the government lifting restrictions to try to boost an economy that lost millions of jobs when the virus hit in March. India’s caseload has increased drastically in the last seven days, adding more than 75,000 daily infections.

From the states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Uttar Prades more than 60% of the active cases are coming. The capital, Delhi have also recorded its highest number of infections in last two months, 3200. The emergence of COVID-19 has also increased in numbers in many rural areas. The rise in cases also shows the increase of testing - The number of daily tests conducted across the country has increased by more than one million.

In early August, India became the third country to pass two million cases.

India imposed a strict lockdown in March to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, which then numbered in only hundreds. But to promote economic activities it began to ease out the lockdown in June, even the cases continued to spike. Due to the pandemic and lockdown, its economic actives faced a massive downfall during the quarter.
