Health Desk-19 July, 2020: Regent Group chairman Mohammad Shahed alias Shahed Karim supplied low-quality masks and PPE to doctors of various hospitals by opening a fake company.
Shahed opened an organisation called Alfred Global Factory Limited, but no such company exists. Shahed was providing PPE to various hospitals as per a subcontract by opening a Facebook page in the name of the fake company amid the coronavirus crisis. The information about such fraud was revealed at an unofficial press conference at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Media Centre on Saturday.
Abdul Baten, additional commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said information about various frauds committed by Shahed has been found during interrogation.
In the early stages of the coronavirus outbreak when there was a mask and PPE crisis, Shahed provided low-quality masks and PPE to the hospitals through the fake company by taking permission, he said.
The police official said Shahed opened an organisation and used to supply masks and PPE. In fact, no such organisation exists.
On July 7, RAB filed a case against 17 people, including Regent Group Chairman Mohammad Shahed, for their alleged involvement in issuing fake Covid-19 certificates and other misdeeds.
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Regent Group chairman Mohammad Shahed alias Shahed Karim with illegal arms from the bordering area of Debhata upazila in Satkhira on July 15.
Later, he was taken on a 10-day remand for interrogation over issuing fake Covid-19 certificates and other misdeeds.
