Health Desk-21 March, 2019: The World Down Syndrome Day is being observed in Bangladesh like elsewhere in the world on Thursday to raise public awareness of Down syndrome, a congenital disorder caused by having an extra 21st chromosome, reports BSS.
This year’s theme of the Day is ‘Walking Together’.
World Down Syndrome Day has been officially observed by the United Nations (UN) since 2012. Many organisations and communities, including the UN and Down Syndrome International, promote the day to raise people’s awareness and understanding of Down syndrome.
On the eve of the Day, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina greeted people, born with Down Syndrome, their families and caretakers.
The premier, in her message, said the government has implemented extensive programmes to include the population with special characteristics autistic and mentally challenged into the mainstream of the society.
