Health Desk-- 25 June, 2018: Prof Dr Habibe Millat, a parliamentary standing committee member for social welfare ministry, said that there has been no significant reduction in maternal mortality from 2010 to 2016.

He said this while addressing a roundtable titled “Safe Motherhood: existing situation and how to address it,” jointly organised by Prothom Alo and Unicef at CA Bhaban in Karwan Bazar on Sunday.

The discussion also emphasised on quality healthcare facilities and family's support as the most important factors towards ensuring safer motherhood.

Prof Abul Kalam Azad, director general for DGHS, stressed on employing more midwives to improve overall maternity care in the country.

Underage marriages, poor living standards and lack of education and awareness are key reasons behind maternal mortality, said, another official of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
