Health Desk—July 12, 2017: A total of 87 per cent of population in the country is now under safe water facilities, Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain on Tuesday told parliament.
While responding to a question from treasury bench lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar, Hossain said, “And the rest collect safe water from other distant sources”.
The minister said 99 per cent of the population is now under basic sanitation coverage in the country.
Of them, 61 percent people use modern latrines while 28 percent use shared latrines and 10 percent use non-developed latrines.
In reply to another starred question of Awami League MP AKM Shahjahan Kamal, the minister said there are 71,654 farmer cooperatives societies with 22.95 lakh active members across the country under Bangladesh Rural Development Board (BRDB).
Besides, there are 7,069 women cooperatives societies with 2.56 lakh active members in the country, he added.
