On this day in 1971, the Pakistan occupation forces surrendered to the Bangladesh-India allied forces at Suhrawardy Udyan after a nine-month War of Independence.
To mark the day, the nation pays profound homage to the brave sons of the soil who laid down their lives for the country’s liberation.
The celebration has reached a new height following the UNESCO’s recognition of Bangabandhu’s historic 7th March speech as part of the world’s documentary heritage.
On October 30, 2017, the UN body made the announcement.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages on the occasion urging the countrymen to work for consolidating sovereignty and independence of the country.
In his message, President Abdul Hamid said: “On the eve of the Victory Day, I extend my sincere felicitations and warm greetings to my fellow countrymen living at home and abroad.
In her message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said Today is the 16 December, the Great Victory Day. This is a unique day of pride for the Bangali nation.
The government, different political parties, socio-cultural organisations and educational institutions have drawn up elaborate programmes to celebrate the victory achieved with the supreme sacrifices of three million people and at the cost of chastity of two lakh women.
Meanwhile, health portal amarhealth.com organized a day long program 'May Everybody Gets Healthcare' to mark the day. Freedom fighers, physicians, singers and a group of students performed the event to recall the couragious sons of our country who laid down their lives for our victory.
