Health Desk-15 Dec’18: On the day 14th December in 1971, country's renowned intellectuals were dragged out of their homes, blindfolded and taken to unknown places and then brutally tortured and slaughtered.
Their bodies were later dumped at Rayerbazar, Mirpur and some other killing fields in the capital.
Sensing an imminent defeat, the Pakistani forces and local collaborators committed the cold-blooded mass murders aiming to annihilate the country's intelligentsia and cripple the emerging Bangladesh intellectually.
The national flag was hoisted at half-mast along with black flags on the day.
President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid tributes to the martyred intellectuals placing a wreath at Martyred Intellectuals Memorial at Mirpur in the capital in the morning
The government has chalked out elaborate programmes to commemorate the 14 December tragedy.
