Health Desk--- 14 July, 2017: Dhaka WASA has installed water ATM booths from where city people can buy water using prepaid cards.
Initially, WASA set up the water ATM booths in the capital’s Fakirapool and Mugda areas as a pilot project. In the water ATM booths, anyone can buy any quantity of fresh water starting from 1 litre at Tk 0.40.
According to WASA, nine months ago, the first water ATM booth was set up in Fakirapool area and it became popular overnight. Later, another one was installed in Mugda area on July 9.
The experimental project has been proved to be a success, and now WASA is planning to open 100 such water booths in the capital.
To avail the service one needs to have a ‘Water ATM card’ with non-refundable security money of Tk 200 only.
To get the ATM card, customers have to submit their NID card and two copies of passport-size photographs. People can recharge minimum 1 taka and maximum 1 lakh taka in the card.
Mohammad Year Khan, project coordinator of installation of water ATM booth, said, “Although this water ATM booth has been set up on experimental basis, but people in the areas are getting benefit from this. We’re getting huge response from people. They have welcomed this service.”
