Health Desk—May 5, 2017: The International Day of the Midwife (IDM) 2017 is being observed in the country on Friday as elsewhere in the world.
The day is being observed as a mark of recognition to the contribution of midwives to saving lives of women, adolescent girls and newborns, sometimes under very difficult circumstances, a press release said.
To mark the day, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages.
In his message, President Abdul Hamid laid emphasis on increasing the numbers of trained and skilled midwives in the country to reduce mother and child mortality rates at desired level.
Referring to this year's theme of the day 'Midwives, Mothers and Families: Partners for Life' the President said this theme is very time befitting.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in her message, said, "I believe proper planning and coordinated management and huge mass awareness can play effective role in resolving health problems of mothers and children."
The President and the Prime Minister wished all success of the day.
