Bibi Fatema Khatun—February 4, 2018: Aiming to reach healthcare at door steps of people, health news portal has been making successive report on country’s first postgraduate medical university Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).

The post-graduation of BSMMU is internationally recognized which is undoubtedly a great achievement for Bangladesh. Moreover, doctors from abroad come here for post-graduation degree. Country’s first medical university provides word class research opportunity. As a result, a number of research report were published in internal journals including Lancet and our country index too.

An interview of Prof Dr. Shahidullah Shikdar, Pro VC of BSMMU, has been published today for our readers. This well-known teacher shared his experience with health news portal

Here is the fourth episode among the successive reports on BSMMU for our beloved readers. What’s your role during liberation war?

Prof Dr. Shahidullah Shikdar: In 1969, I was a school boy. During liberation war, I participated in mass upsurge through Students’ Union. As a student, I participated in the procession. What’s the role of physicians during liberation war?

Prof Dr. Shahidullah Shikdar: Physicians used to render treatment among the war wounded people through field camps. Among the physicians, Dr. Sarwar Ali, Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury, Dr. Mahmud, Dr. Nazimuddin and so on came forward to ensure healthcare for wounded freedom fighters. Dr. Sitara Begum was also present there to cooperate. We were students at that time. As a young student, I got chance to take part in liberation war. Because, there was a freedom fighter camp in our house. Whenever, crisis created against country or nationalism, physicians came forward. What are the facilities, BSMMU proving for freedom fighters?

Prof Dr. Shahidullah Shikdar: On my own initiative, I formed a freedom fighter cell. So that freedom fighters can get free treatment. Moreover, surgery, treatment & free diagnosis facilities are available for them. There are two cabins fixed for freedom fighters. They can get admitted to other cabins with half payment. You have been leading research for four years. Would you please tell about BSMMU?

Prof Dr. Shahidullah Shikdar: We’re looking into research activities with high importance. Bangabandhu’s daughter Sheikh Hasina always says, medical college & medical university can’t run in the same way. Besides education and service in medical university, research is important. Teachers and students research here. Earlier, our research published in Lancet and in our country index too. Due to our research especially, research on Arsenic contamination, we achieved global recognition. You know, data on arsenic research of Bangladesh, widely used in Europe, America and Japan. Every year, over 1,000 students get admitted here and they go out with being specialist doctors. How is about int’l recognition of BSMMU research?

Prof Dr. Shahidullah Shikdar: It’s a matter of great hope that our post-graduation is internationally recognized. Doctors from Nepal, India, Malaysia, Mauritius, Bhutan, Kashmir, Maldives, Sri Lanka etc. come here for post-graduation.
