National Vegetables Fair-2018 begins

Health Desk: 15 January 2018: Aiming to ensure sound health, nutrition for consumers and safe vegetables production, a three-day National Vegetables Fair-2018 began in the capital on Sunday.

Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan inaugurated the fair at the auditorium of Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) at Farmgate as the chief guest while it was attended by Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury as the special guest.

Speaking as a special guest Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury said: “We are now getting vegetables round the year following introduction of hybrid vegetables.”

“We import potato starch from foreign countries,” the minister said.

“Now, we shall have to strive to make potato starch in the country through research.”

“We have already achieved recognition as world heritage by pursuing floating vegetables cultivation and it will spread around the globe soon,” she said.

She stressed the importance of awareness about fresh vegetables cultivation for nutrition among people. 

While speaking, the shipping minister said: “Once vegetable was available at a certain season, but now farmers cultivate vegetables round the year and vegetables are also exported abroad.”

“Vegetables have been commercialised due to its financial benefit,” he said, adding that now we have to produce safe vegetables without using insecticides.

The senior secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Md Moinuddin Abdullah, presided over the opening ceremony.

The Ministry of Agriculture organised the fair with the theme ‘Sara Bachhar Sabji Chashe, Pushti Swasthya Artho Ashe.’
