Sale of rotten meat on rise alarmingly

Health Desk: May 28, 2019- The sale of date-expired rotten meat in markets across the country has been rising alarmingly. As a result anxiousness among the consumers has been raising widely.

According to the health experts, unscrupulous butchers are selling date-expired rotten meat by mixing blood to give it a fresh look caring less for customers’ health.

Despite the health concern of consumers, markets in the capital and other parts of the country are flooded with rotten and toxic meat, sources said.

On a recent tip-off on Monday, a mobile court seized huge rotten meats from several sops in New Market in the capital.

Executive magistrate Sarwar Alam conducted the mobile court of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

He fined owners of two shop owners Tk 40,000 each. RAB personnel arrested three persons for the offence.

Members of the elite force also seized six maunds of date- expired cow meat mixed with fresh blood or artificial colour from shops.  They also recovered buffalo meat being sold in name of cow meat from the New Market area.

Doctors and experts, however, said meat, a perishable item, cannot be consumed if it is rotten.
