Health Desk: 22th Oct’18: The High Court on Sunday directed Impact Masudul Haque Memorial Community Health Centre and IRIS Enterprise to jointly pay Tk 10 lakh as compensation within one month to each of 17 eye patients for blinding their one eye after conducting cataract surgery on them.
The court also directed the Impact Masudul Haque Memorial Community Health Centre to provide life-time treatment to three other eye patients for wounding one eye of three other patients after the same cataract operation done on them by the Impact in Chuadanga on March 5.
The court ordered Impact Masudul Haque Memorial Community Health Centre to pay Tk 5 lakh as compensation for negligence of treatment of the 20 patients’ whose one eye were infected with bacteria due to unhygienic use of surgical equips used on them in cataract operation.
The court ordered IRIS Enterprise to pay compensation of Tk 5 lakh for doing business of importing eye medicine for 20 years without obtaining license from the Drug Administration.
The court directed Impact and IRIS to pay the compensations money to Civil Surgeon of Chuadanga who would disburse the money to the 17 victims.
The court asked the Impact and IRIS to submit compliance to the High Court’s registrar after paying the compensations.
A bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader issued the directives after disposing of a public interest litigation writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer Amit Das Gupta in April.
The petitioner had submitted that on March 5, the 2nd day of three-day eye camp 24 patients underwent cataract operations and 20 of them became victims of faulty procedures.
