GSK workers demand reopening of factory in BD

Health Desk--2 August, 2018: Officials and workers of GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Bangladesh Limited demanded immediate reopening of its medicine manufacturing unit in Bangladesh.

They raised the demand at a press conference protesting the shutdown of the unit at Chattogram Press Club on Wednesday morning.

It may be mentioned that workers of the GSK, one of the world’s leading research-based pharmaceutical and healthcare companies, have been carrying out demonstration since July 26 after the announcement to shut down the medicine unit by its authority.

GSK Head of Regional Supply Chain Raju Krisna Gowshami announced the decision to close the unit located at Faujdarhat area in the port city due to loss.

GSK Employees Union General Secretary Md Azam in his written statement at the press conference alleged that the immediate past Pakistani Managing Director Iran Shafi conspired to shut down the profitable factory.    

Employees Union President Mohammad Elius, Vice President Md Kamal Uddin and Assistant General Secretary Md Ibrahim were present at the press conference, among others.

Earlier, several hundred workers formed a human chain to press home their demand in front of the Press Club.
