BSTI seals off two jar water firms

Health Desk: 23 Feb’18: The Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) in a drive on Thursday sealed off two jar-water companies, fined five companies and sentenced seven persons to different jail terms for preserving and marketing untreated and unsafe drinking water in plastic jars.

Executive Magistrate Sarowar Alam of RAB headquarter conducted the drive in association with BSTI at Jatrabari area in the capital.

The court also found a water producing company named Unique Drinking Water directly pouring WASA water into jars. BSTI license of the company was expired in 2015.

The company has modern filtering machine but the mobile court has found sand in the filter.

The chemical used for filtering was also found date expired. 

During the drive, BSTI has destroyed around 2,000 water jars for containing untreated water directly taken from WASA supply line.

The court found five companies involved in the illegal business of selling untreated water in the name of safe drinking water. The companies were fined to the tune of Tk 2,50,00 in total and seven responsible persons were sentenced to different jail terms, said Executive Magistrate Sarowar Alam.
