Health Desk: 14 December 2017: The High Court yesterday asked the owner of Niramoy Private Clinic and fake physician Razan Das of Patuakhali, who left a piece of gauze inside a woman’s abdomen, to pay the victim Tk 9 lakh as compensation.

The HC bench asked Arjun Chakrabarty alias Razan Das, who had performed a surgery on Maksuda Begum and was exposed as a fake doctor, to pay Tk 500,000; the clinic owner will have to pay the remaining amount of Tk 400,000.

After considering the petition filed by Begum, who sought compensation, the HC bench, comprising Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice AKM Jahirul Haque, asked Das and the clinic owner to pay the money by January 15, 2018.

According to a newspaper report, the victim had been taken to Niramoy Diagnostic Centre and Clinic in Bauphal Upazila, where she gave birth to a girl after surgery and was released a few days later.

Owing to complaints of stomach pain, she was taken back to the clinic a month later; this time, the doctors prescribed painkillers.

On 12 July, doctors from Sher-e-Bangla Medical College and Hospital detected a piece of gauze inside her abdomen and removed it via another surgery.

On 6 November, the Patuakhali Civil Surgeon submitted a probe report to the court stating that Razan Das had been using a fake doctor’s certificate. It was also mentioned that Das had conducted a cesarean surgery on a pregnant woman at Niramoy Private Clinic in Patuakhali in May and had left a piece of gauze inside her abdomen.
