Two ‘drug peddlers’ sent to jail in Ctg

Health Desk: 6 July, 2017-- A Chittagong court on Tuesday sentenced two persons including a woman for different periods in a case filed in connection with recovery of Yaba pills last year. 

Chittagong Metropolitan Session Judge Md Shahe Noor awarded the punishment in absence of the convicts, said Chittagong Metropolitan Public Prosecutor (PP) Md Fakhruddin Chowdhury.

The convicts were identified as Shamsul Alam, son of Nurul Islam of Teknaf upazila in Cox’s Bazar district, and Nur Chhafa, wife of one Abdul Malek of the same upazila.

The court sentenced Shamsul Alam to six years imprisonment while Nur Chhafa five years, the PP said.

The court also awarded financial penalty of Tk 5,000 to each of them and one more month imprisonment in default, he said.

Officials of Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) arrested the duo with 1,400 pieces of Yaba tablet from Shah Amanat Bridge area on May 19 last year, according to deposition of the case.

Later, DNC Chittagong Metro Sub Zone Inspector Anwarul Hoque filed a case with Karnaphuli police station in this connection.  

Charge sheet in the case was submitted on June 20 last year while charges against them were framed on November 21 of the same year.

After hearing from six prosecution witnesses the court pronounced the verdict on Tuesday, said the PP.
