Health Desk, May 17, 2017: Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Tuesday said prisons in the country need to uphold human rights by providing a safe, secure and healthy atmosphere for all inmates and prison staff.
Bangladesh will take steps to adopt scientific methods to ensure security in prisons, he also said.
He made the remarks while speaking at the inaugural session of a three-day conference of correctional managers at a city hotel.
Bangladesh Prison Directorate and International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) jointly organised the 4th Asia-Pacific Regional Correctional Managers Conference with the theme of “Balancing Security and Humanitarian Needs within Prisons”.
Representatives from 14 Asia-Pacific nations and the ICRC are participating at the conference.
There are approximately 73,000 inmates in different prisons while 74 percent of them are at pre-trial stage, said Farid Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, secretary of Security Services Division of the home ministry.
Brig Gen Syed Iftekhar Uddin, inspector general of prisons, and Ikhtiyar Aslanov, head of delegation of the ICRC, Dhaka, spoke among others on the occasion.
