Researchers in Cuba have recently discovered a cancer vaccine that shows light of hope for cancer treatment. In near future, vaccine regulated from genetic engineering will widely be replaced in common cancer treatment like chemotherapy and radiotherapy. A. Nazmul Hassan Khan, cancer researcher at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo of New York, believes it by heart.

He wants to introduce updated cancer treatment here in Bangladesh as he is involved in several other cancer related researches. Meanwhile, he has come to Bangladesh aiming to provide developed cancer treatment among its citizens. Dr. Khan has recently talked to ‘Healthtalk’, organized by health news portal

Here is the special report on that exclusive Healthtalk moderated by Bibi Fatema Khatun, reporter You’re a prominent cancer specialist. So, we want to know what is cancer?

Dr. Khan: Cancer is when abnormal cells divide in an uncontrolled way in the body. In all types of cancer, some of the body's cells begin to divide without stopping and spread into surrounding tissues. What are the new treatments for cancer?

Dr. Khan: There are a number of traditional cancer treatments like- Surgery, Radiation Therapy, Chemotherapy etc. Among the updated treatments Immunotherapy, Personalized Medicine etc. are mostly popular. Immunotherapy is a type of cancer treatment that boosts the body's natural defenses to fight the cancer. It uses substances made by the body or in a laboratory to improve or restore immune system function. We can easily detect the genetic disorder in person’s body with the help of Immunotherapy. It’s mainly a treatment of cancer calls for a personalized approach in which therapy selection is designed for each individual patient and this is why we call it Personalized Medicine. You are working for developing cancer treatment. Would you please share your success stories?

Dr. Khan: My work is basically in pre-clinical activities. Preclinical work is to collect data in support of the safety of the new treatment. If I say it in easier word, I work with blood cell cancer. Besides, I’m involved in skin cancer research named ‘melanoma’. I’ve been working in ovarian cancer for the last five years.  The death rate in this disease is very high and there is no treatment for this disease. The main reason behind the death is late diagnosis. To diagnose in early stage, the necessary tools are not invented yet. I’m working to develop these tools. Besides, I’m currently working to develop immunotherapy to make ovarian cancer treatment easier. How does a person find out if he has cancer? How to get rid of this disease?

Dr. Khan: There are many tools to detect cancer and Generic Testing is one of them. The most common causes of cancer are genetic, environmental and related to virus, food habit and chemical. To get rid of breast cancer, self-exam, mammography and screening tests are very common.  We can easily check whether we are infected with cancer. If we can detect cancer in early stage, it’s very easy to have cure from this fatal disease. It should keep in mind that if a person goes to the 3rd or 4th stage of cancer, at that time, doctors have almost nothing to do. Public awareness is a must in this regard. If cancer is detected, patients should not kill time. You’re residing in New York for a long since and came here in Bangladesh recently. What’s your purpose?

Dr. Khan: I came here to visit my mother and also to install updated technology for cancer treatment in Bangladesh. It’s my long cherished dream to do something for our citizens. With an aim to install a center for personalized medicine and immunotherapy, I’m consulting with concerned persons. Hopefully, with the collaboration of New York and Bangladesh this updated technology will help provide effective cancer detection and treatment in Bangladesh. Because, most of the times the side effects of cancer treatment like surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy etc. kill patients. So, it’s time to take latest cancer treatment to avoid its side effects. We can receive proper treatment if the disease is detected at early stage.
